Actually our Danube Bike Trip started already in 2001, when I saw Emir Kusturica’s movie “Black Cat, White Cat” for the first time. I can barely recall the plot, but it was then when the desire for the Danube and the long trip from the Spring to the Black Sea awoke. I carried the dream in me for a decade, that it should be a boat trip or a train ride. Altough with the help of my freshly acquired bike-buzz, it became clear that I will experience the Danube on two wheels. And that I will take that eagerly awaited trip together with Piotr. This year (2012) we finally hopped in the saddles in order to explore the yearned Danube.
36 days on the road, almost 2500 km by bike, around 500 km by train. The trip from the Spring to the Black Sea took us from the West to the East, along the gems of Danube and through the Balkans: Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania.
The highlights: Danube Valley between Tuttlingen and Sigmaringen, Zebu beef, breakfast in bakery
in Sigmaringen, Ice coffee, romantic Passau, apricot harvest in Wachau, Dam path in Slovakia, the Hungarian language, shepherds in Hungary, fascinating Budapest, dogs, dogs, dogs everywhere,
sometimes also small kittens, camping site “Open Air Gallery”, Serbia, the Serbs, The Iron Gate, wild camping by the river, skinny-dipping in the Danube, Shopska salad and fish, clean water in
the Danube after the Iron Gate, helpful Bulgarians, who took us 20 km to the next cash machine by car, donkey carts, German-speaking people everywhere, village livestock concert in Romania,
patience, the River in the morning, Eurovelo 6, riding bike anyway...
